Travel FAQ & Support

Q: What is the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF)?

A: The SDF is a mandatory daily tourism levy collected by the Royal Government of Bhutan. It funds national development, environmental conservation, free healthcare and education, and sustainable infrastructure improvements across the country.

A: The daily SDF rate is structured by nationality:

  • International Guests: USD $100 per adult per night. Children aged 6 to 12 receive a 50% discount (USD $50/night), while children under 6 are exempt.
  • Indian Nationals: INR / Nu. 1,200 per adult per night.

A: Yes, all international tourists (except for a few SAARC countires) require a visa before arrival. As your licensed tour operator, Lotus Radiance will process your visa clearance directly with the Department of Immigration once your trip payment is confirmed.

A: To ensure safety and a high-quality cultural experience, all tourists are required to be accompanied by a licensed Bhutanese tour guide and utilize pre-booked private transportation throughout their journey.

A: Visa fees are non-refundable once processed. However, SDF payments and ground services are subject to specific cancellation timelines. Please note that any third-party transaction costs, bank wire fees, or administrative processing charges may be deducted from your final refund amount. If you cancel before your visa is formally issued or due to verified travel disruptions, the SDF can be refunded or pushed to a future travel date.

A: The local currency is the Bhutanese Ngultrum (Nu.), which is pegged 1:1 with the Indian Rupee (INR). Indian Rupees (in denominations of INR 100 and lower) are widely accepted. Major credit cards are accepted in larger hotels and shops in Thimphu and Paro, but we recommend carrying cash for rural areas.

A: The region can be visited year-round. Spring (March to May) features blooming flowers and clear sunshine, while Autumn brings pleasant skies and cultural festivals.

A: Yes. Full payment is required before your travel documents or visas can be issued. Your funds are securely held to guarantee your hotel, transport, and guide reservations. These advance payments ensure all local arrangements are fully confirmed and ready before you land.
